Holly wins at Haywards Heath

The Sussex County Ladies Golf Association (SCLGA) held a 9-hole Florida* Texas Scramble for junior golfers yesterday at Haywards Heath Golf Club. Eight teams of three competed and West Hoves Holly Crompton was in the winning team with Fenella Buss (East Brighton GC) and Olivia Clegg (Slinfold GC). They had a combined handicap of 66 but won with a remarkable score of 37 strokes, just two shots over par.
Hollys performance was no doubt enhanced having had the privilege, just two weeks ago, of attending the first ever SCLGA Development Squad residential weekend at Goodwood GC. This new venture was for 12-15 year-old girls, with handicaps from 16-25, who had performed well in County events during the summer.
* The Florida format is where the person whose ball was taken cannot hit the next shot (unless they are on the green, when all team members can putt).

West Hove GC's 2013 Junior Championship

The Juniors' Championship was held today and for the third successive year twenty Juniors took part. This year's championship was was won by 4-handicapper Tyler Hounsome, the Juniors' Captain, who shot two very steady gross rounds of 71 to avenge his play-off defeat in last year's event. The net prize-winner was Ryan Mill with a fantastic 10-under-par total of 130 (65 + 65). Another notable score was achieved by Holly Crompton whose second round of 90 (net 62) beat her morning round by no less than 19 shots!

This year's Junior Champion, Tyler Hounsome, is pictured right, flanked on the left by Junior Organiser Ken Stafford and to the right by Club Captain, John Godley.

Just a little note to say what a lovely day we had at West Hove today. Everyone at the club was friendly and welcoming and the junior competition was well organised and my son thoroughly enjoyed his first competition out of his club. Sunday lunch was very much enjoyed by everyone. Kind regards.

Holly Crompton finishes second in SCLGA Under 15s

Playing in her first 'county competition', Junior member Holly Crompton finished in a very creditable second place yesterday at Foxbrigdge GC. She was one of twelve girls chosen to represent the county in a mixed Greensomes competition alongside a Sussex under-13 boys' team. Holly was partnered by Sam Huddlestone from Mannings Heath GC and they both played very well, dovetailing perfectly to score 43 points in strong winds and heavy showers to finish just two points behind the winners.

Holly's father Graeme (our Head Professional) said "I couldn't have been more proud".

Holly Crompton selected to play for Sussex
On 4 March we reported that Holly Crompton, one of our Juniors, had broken 100 for the first time and that she had won her first competition. Well, just three months later, she has now been selected by the Sussex County Ladies' Golf Association to represent their under-15s higher-handicap team in a match against the Sussex under-13 boys' team at Foxbridge GC on Sunday 23 June.
Holly's invitation to play in this County match follows her efforts last Sunday when she finished a very creditable 9th out of 22 in horribly windy conditions at the Worthing GC Girls' Open. She is making great progress, having only been playing seriously for the past year, and everybody at the Club congratulates her and wishes her well - good luck Holly.

Our Junior 'Summer Golf Camps' return
The Club is delighted to report that our Assistant Professional, Russell Cronin, will once again be running our very successful 'Summer Golf Camps' during the school summer holidays. These fun-packed events are designed for youngsters who have never before played this great game of golf - or for those who have played but would like to improve. This will be the sixth year that these camps have been run and from past experience it is advisable to book early as spaces are limited.

West Hove Juniors beat Pyecombe GC
Junior Organiser Ken Stafford reports that our Junior representative team beat Pyecombe GC yesterday in the first round of the Alan Covey Cup (the SCGU's team foursomes knockout event for junior golfers).  Each team comprises four pairs but unfortunately Pyecombe only arrived with two pairs. The two matches that were played ended 1 - 1, so West Hove won 3 - 1 having been awarded the other two games. Our team members were as follows:
          George Goddard & Ashley Chamberlain
          Ryan Miller & Alex Jago
          Andrew Blackman & Tom Wedge
          Owyn Harvey & Luke Bramwell

West Hove Juniors do well again...
The annual Parson's Memorial Trophy was played for at Copthorne GC on Monday 8 April when eleven Junior teams from Sussex clubs competed in this Sussex County Golf Union event. Each club was represented by four juniors and our team comprised Elliot Meeten (4), George Goddard (8), Ryan Miller (9) and Andrew Blackman (15). Ifield GC won the main scratch event, but our team performed well to finish third in the 36-hole handicap category, just four shots behind the winning Royal Eastbourne team. And to cap a good day, Elliot Meeten and George Goddard won the afternoon Foursomes with a gross 81.

Ken Stafford and the Juniors win at Hassocks
Dockerill's Brighton Limited has sponsored the annual Junior Golf League in Sussex for many years. Yesterday, they held a special Texas Scramble competition for teams comprising their Junior Organiser and three Juniors. Our team was Ken Stafford (our Junior Organiser, playing off 8), George Goddard (the Juniors' Vice-Captain, playing off 9), Ryan Miller (handicap 11) and Andrew Blackman (handicap 15). We are delighted to report that despite the unseasonably cold weather at Hassocks GC, West Hove won the event with a creditable net score of 55.7.

Congratulations go to Holly Crompton, one of our Junior girls, for breaking 100 for the first time. This was good enough for Holly, who played off 34, to achieve another notable first by shooting a net 65 to win her first Junior Medal. And if you thought the name was familiar, you're right, she is the daughter of our Head Professional Graeme. Her new handicap is 30.5.             [Posted 4 March 2026]

How about joining West Hove Juniors?

In 2006 West Hove GC was only the second club in the country to be given GolfMark status (
a national scheme that identifies and recognises junior and beginner friendly golf facilities). This prestigious award is reviewed every three years by England Golf and at the end of last year we  were re-accredited with this honour for the third time.
The Club has long had a thriving Junior Section but is still constantly
working towards further improvements.

The Junior Section's Mission Statement reads:
"The aim of our Junior Section is to provide a fun and safe working environment for children from 9 to 17 years of age and to give them golfing skills that can be enjoyed for the rest of their lives".
As Spring approaches, we  invite all youngsters who would like to take up golf to come and join us. To learn more and for further details, including an application form please click here.
