Eight of our members will shortly be undertaking an incredible challenge to raise money for a very worthy charity - Macmillan Cancer Support. On Monday 30th June, Gary Salt, Mark Gully, Keith Fender, Damon Raikes, Jeff Rhodes, Jonny Ingram, John Miller and Ryan Miller will try to play one hundred and one holes of golf in a day over our course (or as many holes as their bodies will allow)!

This intrepid group will tee off at sunrise, without the aid of buggies, and continue playing beyond sunset to raise funds for this great cause. This Macmillan Longest Day Challenge has kindly been sanctioned by the Club Captain, David Goldsmith, and the Golf Committee who now ask for your generous support. Sponsorship forms are now available in the Pro-shop and behind the bar so please look out for them. Alternatively, if you are able to get your family and friends to join in the sponsorship you may print off your own form by clicking here In addition to your name, please add the following detail to the top of the sponsorship form: the Team Captain's full name "Mark Gully", the Superhero team/s name "North meets South & A Pro and 3 hackers" and the Reference number "LDG142848".

Team Captain, Mark Gully has now set up a Just Giving web page please donate by visiting http://www.justgiving.com/WestHove101Club and help us raise as much money as possible for this worthy cause. You will also find attached a notice highlighting this fundraising event.

We will endeavour to keep you regularly updated, but in the meantime the Macmillan Cancer Support website states that one in three of us will get cancer and its the toughest thing most of us will ever face. If youve been diagnosed with cancer, or a loved one has, youll want a team supporting you every step of the way. Macmillan Cancer Support can do this by providing practical, medical and financial support - and pushing for better cancer care.

PLEASE SUPPORT OUR 8 MEMBERS & GIVE GENEROUSLY TO THIS GREAT CAUSE.

Kindest thank

New exterior clock and weather vane for the Clubhouse
West Hove GC's Scallywags Golf Society has recently lost two of their members to cancer. Over the past year the Scallywags' members, together with their friends and families, have  donated both time and money to bring about the placement of a permanent memorial tribute. This has been achieved by the erection of a superb weather vane and clock on our clubhouse roof, facing over the golf course. Peter Rodger and Steve Thatcher have been very much involved in this process and the Club thanks them, and the Scallywags, for this very handsome tribute.

The New Club Captain arrives in style!
Over the years it has become customary for the New Captain to arrive in a special fashion for his drive-in. This year was no exception, our new Club Captain, David Goldsmith arrived in a 'state of the art' Bentley car. The car drove down beside the 18th green and dropped off David in front of a packed clubhouse. In keeping with convention, the outgoing Club Captain John Godley had 'putted out' on the 18th green prior David making his grand entrance.

Before Davids scheduled drive-in, he invited our Juniors' Captain, George Goddard, and our Seniors' Captain, Roy Austin, to drive-in. George, a rapidly improving category 1 golfer, ripped his drive 186 yards whilst 21-handicapper Roy had no problem finding the fairway with a very creditable drive of 136 yards, Roys first drive was not recorded as he used a super-sized driver for a bit of fun, again it was a very good effort as he made sure he hit his ball past the ladies tee! Having downed the mandatory double brandy, David then belted his drive 140 yards into a cold wind, straight down the middle and very impressive.

As usual there was a draw to see who picked the Club Captain's correct driving distance. The prize, a golfing weekend for four at the East Sussex National GC, was won by Terry Pinker. Our sincere thanks go to the East Sussex National Hotel for donating the prize and to all members who participated. The proceeds will go to the Club Captain's charities.

David then invited everyone present to join him for a drink at the bar and a fantastic buffet lunch provided by the Clubs Catering Manager, Clay Morris. Please click here for photos

Always maintained to the highest standards the course provides a challenge for the low handicap player and an enjoyable game for the less experienced golfer, giving both many magical moments to remember. Alma Sturton was the winner of the draw to determine the distance of her drive and the proceeds will be donated to Julie's chosen charity Dogs Trust, the charity formed in 1891

Holly Crompton wins
The Sussex County Ladies Golf Association (SCLGA) held a 9-hole Florida
* Texas Scramble for junior golfers yesterday at Haywards Heath Golf Club. Eight teams of three competed and
West Hoves Holly Crompton was in the winning team with Fenella Buss (East Brighton GC) and Olivia Clegg (Slinfold GC). They had a combined handicap of 66 but won with a remarkable score of 37 strokes, just two shots over par. please click here for a photo
Hollys performance was no doubt enhanced having had the privilege, just two weeks ago, of attending the first ever SCLGA Development Squad residential weekend at Goodwood GC. This new venture was for 12-15 year-old girls, with handicaps from 16-25, who had performed well in County events during the summer.
* The Florida format is where the person whose ball was taken cannot hit the next shot (unless they are on the green, when all team members can putt).

Jonny Ingram just fails to win
Jonny Ingram was partnered by Peter Tarver-Jones (Worthing GC) yesterday in "The Players' Tour" pairs better-ball competition over The Shire London golf course in Hertfordshire.
This stunning course, designed by Seve Ballesteros, is laid out like few other golf courses in the world. There are six par 5s, six par 4s and six par 3s, and on both the front-nine and the back-nine, no two consecutive holes are the same par!
Jonny and Peter played very well to be 6-under par after 17 holes but they were then confronted by the Shire London's spectacular last hole.
Their website says that this hole "can easily ruin a good round" and that it "will take no prisoners". Unfortunately, this proved to be true as both Jonny and Peter double-bogeyed the hole to leave them on 4-under par, just one shot behind the winning pair.

The golf was followed by a supper and prize presentation.

Seagulls Boss visits West Hove
The Club was delighted to receive a visit yesterday from Oscar Garcia, Brighton & Hove Albion FC's Head Coach. He was greeted by the Professional Shop and the Club's Administration Assistant Jane Edwards, a life-long Seagulls supporter. Apparently, Oscar chose to have a round of golf with Reuben Martinez, Albion's goalkeeping coach. We do not know how he fared at golf but, as a Friend of the Albion, we wish Oscar and his team every success for the rest of the season - and beyond.

Further news from Norway
In the second round of
the LET Access Series Ladies Norwegian Challenge at Hauger Golf Club, Stacey Rodger shot a 5-over par 77, a three shot improvement on her first round. Stacey therefore failed to make the cut but thirty-one professionals and two amateurs did, which fell at 6-over par. Stacey should, however, be proud of her performance over a very challenging course, particularly over holes 4 to 12 over which she shot level par.

Thursday 19 September 2013

News from the Ladies Norwegian Challenge
Ninety-six lady golfers, from 20 countries, teed off yesterday in the LET Access Series Ladies Norwegian Challenge at Hauger Golf Club near Oslo. Amongst them was West Hoves Stacey Rodger who finished the day on 8-over par on a very testing course. Stacey actually found herself 9-over after 13 holes, but fought back well to score 1-under par over the last five holes. Hopefully this improvement can carry forward to todays second round if she is to have any chance of making the cut. The course is very tough, reflected by the fact that only two of the field were able to break par. Stacey's 2nd round will be reported here later.

Thursday 19 September 2013 Half a million visits!
The Club is very pleased to report that it received its 500,000th visit to its website yesterday.

Brian Murphy has two reasons to celebrate
The Leslie Green Committee Cup, an annual competition for present and past male Committee Members, was held today in blustery conditions with a very strong westerly wind. This helped Gordon Eaton achieve a fabulous "eagle" two on the second hole when his 156 yard 7-iron 2nd shot took one bounce before finishing in the cup.  This achievement was then eclipsed on the 13th hole when playing partner Brian Murphy's 3-wood, into the teeth of the gale, finished in the hole to give Brian his first ever 'ace'. Brian subsequently had further reason to celebrate as the four points he earned helped him total 38 points to win the competition. Club Captain John Godley finished second with 35 points.

202 points - Saturday Boys "B"
201 points - Fred's Army
193 points - Saturday Boys "C"
190 Points - Earlybirds
188 points - The Saturday Slappers
187 points - Saturday Boys "A"

Stacey Rodger Stableford prize-winners
The Club hosted the "Stacey Rodger Stableford" last Saturday when 61 members participated to help fund the considerable costs of a new professional golfer. The prize-winners were:
1st place: Alex Wakefield 38 points
2nd Place: Carl Rodger 37 points
3rd place: Steve Nielsen 36 points
4th Place: Greg Ash 36 points
The "Nearest-the-pin" winners were:
3rd hole: Alan Linkman
7th hole: Mark Charlottes
13th hole: Richard Daughtrey
17th hole: Mark Gully
Stacey also held a raffle and this was a great success. Most of the prizes were claimed on the day, however, the following raffle strips remain unclaimed:
Pink tickets 516-520 and 571-575
Yellow tickets 246-250 and 851-855.
As this was a 'one-off' competition, the normal prize procedure will not be followed. Instead, any of the above winners who have not received their prize may collect it from the Club's office.

Stacey would like to sincerely thank all those members who supported this event which has raised the fantastic sum of nearly 700. She will be using these funds towards her entry fee for the Ladies European Tour School which takes place in Morocco later this year. Good luck.

Stacey Rodger is runner-up
In the Jamega Ladies' Pro Golf Tour's 36-hole tournament over the Five Lakes GC in Essex this week, Stacey Rodger shot a 79 on a windy first day to be in fifth place. In her second round she played a lot better to shoot a level-par 72, which included a fabulous 3-under-par back-nine score, to move her up into the runners-up position - enabling her to pick up the third 'pay-cheque' of her professional career.
Hopefully this result augers well for Stacey as she will soon be travelling to Norway to compete in the Ladies Norwegian Challenge, a very large tournament over the Hauger GC near Oslo. We will report her progress here.

Jay Stally helps England win a European Championship
Further to our report dated 9 August, we are delighted to learn that West Hove member Jay Stally made a significant contribution to help the English Deaf Golf Association (EDGA) win the
2013 European Deaf Golf Championships. The championships were held over the
North West course of Kytaja Golf Club, in Finland, over the last weekend and Jay's efforts are summarised by the following extract taken from the EDGA website:
"Massive congratulations to the England 'A' team on winning the 2013 European Deaf Golf Championships on the country's debut. The team of Mike Burris, Jay Stally and Paul Waring led by Captain Martin Anderson successfully launched good scores to take 1st place in the event. After day 1, England were leading Denmark by 7 strokes and Sweden by 12 strokes. A resurgence in form from the Swedes saw some fantastic golf and level the 2 day scores with England. Count-back was involved to include the 4th player in the team and with the 'Never say never' attitude of Jay Stally, England clinched the title".
Jay hopes to be in the 2015 England team which will be defending their title in Norway. In the meantime, he has further ambitions as the current EDGA Captain,
Martin Anderson, has 'stepped down' and has recommended Jay to captain the EDGA team for the 2014 World Championships in Michigan. USA. Good luck Jay.

A further Reciprocal Golf Agreement
Following our reports dated 2 and 14 August (below), the Club is delighted to announce that yet another 'reciprocal golf agreement' has been agreed for West Hove members. This time we have negotiated arrangements with Enmore Park GC in Somerset.
Enmore Park GC
is situated in the rolling Quantock Hills, about 3 miles west of Bridgewater. It was founded in 1906 and moved from its original site in nearby Cannington to its current position in 1932. The course was then re-designed by Fred Hawtree in 1972 and this beautiful championship layout affords everybody the chance to enjoy some stunning scenery, whilst providing a challenging, yet pleasurable, test of skill for players of all abilities. The Club has  become a popular venue for national competitions and was chosen to host the English Women's' Open Amateur Stroke Play in 2009 and the British Boys' Championship in 2011. West Hove hosts a historical SPGU Championship
West Hove GC has once again been honoured to host the Sussex Professional Golfers' Union Championship. Thirty-one of Sussex's best professional golfers competed in yesterday's first round of this stroke-play event and Giles Velvick, from Horam Park, was the only player to beat par with a 3-under total of 67.

In today's second round conditions were tougher and nobody was able to beat par. However, the only lady golf professional competing, Maria Tulley from Eastbourne Downs GC, shot the best score of the day (a one-over par 71) to tie with Giles on 143.

To determine the winner of the Bill Watts Trophy and SPGU Challenge Cup they then had to have a play-off and Maria's par four on the first play-off hole, the 14th, was good enough for her to create history. She is the first woman to have won the Sussex Professional Championship in their 101-year history. This was no fluke as the Club had been asked to increase the yardage from the red tees by over 300 yards specifically for this event.

For the record, Giles Velvick was runner-up in front of Alastair Malins (Mid Sussex), Jason Partridge (Piltdown), Mark Packard (Royal Eastbourne) and Jack Budgen (East Sussex National) who all finished in joint third place on 144.

Finally, older West Hove members may be familiar with Maria's surname of "Tulley". And so they should, as Maria is the niece of Alan Tulley our Club Captain in 1988/89.

Another new Reciprocal Golf Agreement is announced
Further to our report dated 2 August (below), the Club is pleased to announce that another new reciprocal golf agreement has been created for West Hove Members. They will now be able to play 'free'
at a fourth golf club in Dorset following negotiations with Wareham Golf Club.
Wareham GC
is an established eighteen-hole course in the Isle of Purbeck and is situated in a tranquil setting with picturesque views over the Purbeck Hills, Poole Harbour and towards Corfe Castle. For the payment of a small booking fee, West Hove members now have 'courtesy' of four golf courses in Dorset so a short break away would be a good way to experience them. Members can find out more about all of our Reciprocal Golf Agreements if they click here.

Jay Stally plays for England
Congratulations are extended to Jay Stally who was chosen to represent the English Deaf Golf Association (EDGA) in the 2013 Four Nations Cup over the past week. This year's competition, only the second championship between England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales, was hosted by the Wales Deaf Golf Association over the Wales National Golf Course in the Vale of Glamorgan.

Jay and his golfing partner halved their first match on Tuesday against Wales helping the EDGA to a 4 - win. However, one of the English players unfortunately 'walked out' on the team and Jay then had to play on his own against the Irish and Scottish pairs on Wednesday and Thursday respectively. He did remarkably well to only lose both matches one down especially as he had to play off scratch and was giving his opponents up to 15 shots! He played his best ever golf, scoring an excellent total of just one-over-par for his three rounds, and this earned him the 'Golfer of the Tournament' award. We understand that Ireland won the Four Nations Cup.

West Hove GC's Junior Club Championship
The Juniors' Championship was held today and for the third successive year twenty Juniors took part. This year's championship was was won by 4-handicapper Tyler Hounsome, the Juniors' Captain, who shot two very steady gross rounds of 71 to avenge his play-off defeat in last year's event. The net prize-winner was Ryan Mill with a fantastic 10-under-par total of 130 (65 + 65). Another notable score was achieved by Holly Crompton whose second round of 90 (net 62) beat her morning round by no less than 19 shots!

Two new Reciprocal Golf Agreements announced
The Club is pleased to announce that two new reciprocal golf agreements have been negotiated. From Monday 5 August 2013, West Hove Members will be able to play 'free'
** at Weymouth GC in Dorset and also Came Down GC, just south of Dorchester.
Weymouth GC is a beautiful parkland course and is situated in the heart of the town with views across the Jurassic Coast. It prides itself as being one of the friendliest private members' clubs in the South.
Came Down GC is located in Thomas Hardy country and boasts stunning views towards Weymouth, Portland, Dorchester and even the Isle of Wight. They also claim to have played an important part in the founding of the Ryder Cup (please check their website).
The Club hopes that these two new venues will be visited by our members - of course, as they are within close proximity to one another, members could play both courses on separate days if local overnight accommodation is arranged.
** If you would like to find out more about our Reciprocal Golf Agreements please click here (and then scroll to the bottom of the page for details of these two Golf Clubs).

West Hove GC has a new Ladies' Champion
After weeks of searing sunshine, it was particularly disappointing to have a very wet day for the Ladies' Championship. The weather was so bad that many of the competitors chose not to play and the competition was restricted to 27 holes for the first time in living memory.
As the reigning champion Stacey Rodger had turned professional, it was inevitable that the Club would have a new Ladies' Champion and Beverley Davis proved to be a very worthy winner in atrocious conditions. The leading players on the day were as follows:
Cumberledge Cup (gross scores)
1st - Beverley Davis 133

2nd - Grace Shepherd 139
3rd
- Julie Macadam 145
Millennium Cup (net scores)
1st - Beverley Davis 112
2nd - Grace Shepherd 113
3rd - Lynne Henshaw 115
The Vets Cup was restricted to 13 holes and was won by Jan Seabrook on 54 (71-17) with Sue Gleeson as runner-up on 61 (81-20).

Tom Coulson says "Thank-you"
Immediately following the Club Championship presentation today, Howard Coulson addressed the assembled members on behalf of his son Tom. Howard explained that Tom wanted to thank the Club, the Board and all those members, many of whom were present today, who had helped him over the past 10 years to achieve his golfing ambitions. Without such great support, financial and otherwise, Tom would not have been able to have turned professional in 2009, nor be in his current teaching role at the David Leadbetter Academy at the La Cala Resort in Mijas, Spain.
On behalf of the Club and everyone present, Club Captain John Godley accepted a large framed photograph of Tom playing at The Concession Golf Club, in Sarasota, USA. It is entitled "Splashing out on the Beach" and was taken by David Cannon who is considered by many to be the world's greatest golf photographer.
The photo' has a certain poignancy, having been taken about three years ago when Howard's son Tom was playing with David Cannon's son in Florida.

West Hove GC has a new Club Champion
Forty-eight members competed in today's Club Championship and our new champion is Tony Humphrey. Tony, who plays off a handicap of four, joined the Club 11 years ago and has played in this event every year since. His patience has today been rewarded with rounds of 73 and 71 in difficult conditions. He owes his success in particular to the start of his afternoon round when he shot 3, 3, 3, 3 and 4 or, put another way, birdie, birdie, par, birdie and birdie! Not everything went his way however as he just missed out on a 'hole-in-one' when his tee shot on the par-3 seventh hole "lipped out".

Having won the Championship, Tony's net score of 135 was excluded from the 'Nick O'Byrne Trophy' which is presented for the day's best net score. This went to Tyler Hounsome, the Club's Juniors' Captain, with net rounds of 71 and 68. please click here for photos

The top players in each of the competitions were as follows:

The Club Championship
1st Tony Humphrey 144  (73 & 71)
2nd Gary Salt 147  (76 & 71)
3rd Tyler Hounsome 149  (76 & 73)

The Nick O'Byrne Trophy
1st Tyler Hounsome 139
2nd Greg Andrew 143
Joint third Gary Salt, Paul Northam
& Kevin Woolley

West Hove GC's Pro-Am
Once again, twenty-one teams (the maximum for a shotgun start at West Hove) teed off to compete in yesterday's annual Pro-Am. This event remains one of the most popular Pro-Ams for the Sussex Professional Golfers' Union and their secretary, Cliff Pluck, was delighted to be one of a three-man team who organised the day (the others were West Hove members Andy Macgregor-Boyle and Brian Murphy).
Following the golf, which was played in hot but breezy conditions, everybody enjoyed an early evening meal before taking part in the usual raffle and auction.
West Hove's Club Captain, John Godley, would like to thank the three organisers, the twenty-one professionals and all of the competitors for raising c. 2,600 for his charity, Chestnut Tree House.

Jay Stally shines again
The English Deaf Golf Associations (EDGA) Open Championship, a 54-hole event, was played in searing temperatures over the weekend at Heythrop Park GC in Oxfordshire.  We are delighted to report that West Hoves Jay Stally finished in second place with rounds of 73, 79 and 79 which included a hole-in-one at the 160 yard par three15th hole in the first round!
We are also very pleased to see that one of the competitors in the EDGA Open was Martin Broomfield. He will be remembered by the older West Hove members as a past green-keeper at the Club and the son of Des Broomfield. Des was a long-time member, ex
-Brighton & Hove Albion footballer, a past course record holder and most notably the local pig farmer at the old course! He introduced the popular Play for a Pig competition which is still played for every year just before Christmas.
Please click here for a photo of Jay with the EDGAs Patron, Tony Jacklin, (the 1969 Open Champion, the 1970 US Open Champion and four-time Captain of Europes Ryder Cup Team) who has himself been hearing-impaired for over 25 years.

Our "Superheroes"
'
Superhero' is the title afforded to those who take part in Macmillan Cancer Support's "Longest Day Golf Challenge", an event where teams of four play 4 competitive rounds of golf in a single day for the charity.
Yesterday, our superheroes (
Matt Blake, Jill Corbett, Gary Salt and Lynne Henshaw) not only played four rounds of golf but they went on to complete an incredible 100 holes! Their super-human effort meant that, comfort-breaks apart, they played golf continuously from 4.25am to 9.05pm (over 16 hours), collectively walked 100 miles and played over 1,800 golf shots!

This incredible achievement was undertaken by our team to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support. They have done the hard work, so why not recognise their fantastic achievement by making a donation now.

The Downland Golfing Society
During the Second World War (on 1 April 2026) four avid golfers, Messrs Armitage, Radford, Wainwright and Wilson formed the Hovian Golfing Society. They later changed their name to the Downland Golfing Society which was more in keeping with their surroundings over the West Hove Golf Club in Hangleton. Some 70 years on they are today affectionately known as the Downlanders and they are one of the oldest surviving golfing societies in Sussex.
The Downlanders play every Thursday afternoon during the summer months over a fifteen-hole, par 58, course. Yesterday saw the second round of their 2013 annual championship which was won by Damon Raikes with a 30-hole gross score of 117 (one-over par) with Terry Pinker (handicap 7) winning the net prize with 115.

A hat-trick for Jonny Ingram
Congratulations to Jonny Ingram who finished joint third (on 2-over par) in today's "TP Tour" event over the West Course at East Sussex National GC (ESN). Remarkably, this completes a hat-trick of third places in his first three events as a professional.

Jonny's 69 yesterday, over the East Course, comprised three birdies and fifteen pars and his 77 today on the West Course, in exceptionally windy conditions, was made up of five bogeys and thirteen pars - very steady golf. Jonny described the conditions as "horrendous" and said afterwards "I hit the ball great, very pleased! I didn't quite get the breaks or putts today but happy with the finish". His next event is 'The Open' qualifying, at ESN again, on 24 June.

Today's tournament was won by Jonny's 28-year old playing partner Lloyd Kennedy who turned pro' in 2006 and who played on the European Tour last year. Lloyd won by six shots (from Ben Martin) and finished on a great 6-under par.

Jonny Ingram starts well at East Sussex National
The TP (Tournament Professional) Tour's 36-hole event over East Sussex National Golf Club's two splendid courses started today. Fifty-five competitors teed off this afternoon over the 7,081 yard East Course, host to two European Championships, and we are delighted to report that Jonny Ingram finished second with a splendid 3-under par 69. He will be teeing off in the last group tomorrow when the 7,154 yard West Course will be played. More news tomorrow.

Holly Crompton selected to play for Sussex
On 4 March we reported that Holly Crompton, one of our Juniors, had broken 100 for the first time and that she had won her first competition. Well, just three months later, she has now been selected by the Sussex County Ladies' Golf Association to represent their under-15s higher-handicap team in a match against the Sussex under-13 boys' team at Foxbridge GC on Sunday 23 June.
Holly's invitation to play in this County match follows her efforts last Sunday when she finished a very creditable 9th out of 22 in horribly windy conditions at the Worthing GC Girls' Open. She is making great progress, having only been playing seriously for the past year, and everybody at the Club congratulates her and wishes her well - good luck Holly.

West Hove Ladies' winning streak ends
Our Ladies have had a fabulous run in this year's 'Daily Mail Classic' knockout competition. Unfortunately, that run came to an end in Saturday's fifth round match over the Cathedral Course at Chichester GC when we were narrowly beaten 2-3. Playing against a low handicap team, Megan Bibby and Jackie Pinker lost their matches, but Lynne Henshaw and team captain Grace Shepherd won to level the match at 2-2.
Rita Hedderman was in the last match and, like her opponent, needed a win on the eighteenth hole to win the match. In front of a large crowd, Rita reached the green in three but was beaten after her opponent chipped in from off the green for a par four whilst Rita's putt narrowly missed the cup.
Grace would like to record her thanks to all the ladies who competed this year and to the caddies on Saturday (Jeanie Bailey, Beverley Davis, Sheila Lowe and Jan Seabrook).

100 holes of golf in a day!
Four of our members will shortly be undertaking an incredible challenge to raise money for a very worthy charity - Macmillan Cancer Support. On Monday 1st July, Matt Blake, Jill Corbett, Gary Salt and Lynne Henshaw will try to play one hundred holes of golf in a day over our course (or as many holes as their bodies will allow)!

This intrepid four-ball will tee off at sunrise, without the aid of buggies, and continue playing beyond sunset to raise funds for this great cause. This Macmillan Longest Day Challenge has kindly been sanctioned by the Club Captain, John Godley, and the Golf Committee who now ask for your generous support. Sponsorship forms will be available in the Pro-shop and behind the bar so please look out for them. Alternatively, if you are able to get your family and friends to join in the sponsorship you may download your own form by clicking here. In addition to your name, please add the following detail to the top of the sponsorship form: the Team Captain's full name "Matt Blake", the Superhero team name "JillyMatt & the Managers" and the Reference number "LDG131703".

Further details will be published here soon, but in the meantime
the Macmillan Cancer Support website states that one in three of us will get cancer and its the toughest thing most of us will ever face. If youve been diagnosed with cancer, or a loved one has, youll want a team supporting you every step of the way. Macmillan Cancer Support can do this by providing practical, medical and financial support - and pushing for better cancer care.

PLEASE SUPPORT OUR 4 MEMBERS & GIVE GENEROUSLY TO THIS GREAT CAUSE.

"200 Club"

Fairway Distance Markers
The Club today announced that new circular fairway distance markers have been countersunk into the middle of our fairways. The red discs are 100 yards from the centre of the green, whilst the white discs (on holes 5, 6, 12, 15 and 18) are 200 yards from the centre of those greens. The existing 150 yard markers on the edge of our fairways remain in place.

In addition, five new ball-washers have been purchased (and the existing ones refurbished) so that we now have a ball-washer on every hole.

All of this has been funded by our 200 Club. Membership of the 200 Club is still available, so if any West Hove member (or employee) would like to participate in future draws they can download the rules and an application form by clicking here.

Hugo Boss Hole-In-One Watch

Pat French gets another prize
In our story dated 20 May 2026 we reported that Pat French
was to receive a 3-litre bottle of wine thanks to the 'Rioja Bordon Hole-In-One Wine Promotion'. It now transpires that Pat is one of the first recipients of a unique Hugo Boss watch. The Telegraph newspaper and HowDidiDo have formed an association with Hugo Boss watches and have recently started giving away these commemorative watches to golf club members who achieve an 'ace' in a qualifying competition.

Stacey Rodger plays on the Jamega Tour
Stacey has pulled out of the LET Access tournament near Paris later this month, but today competed in the Jamega Ladies' Pro Tour event at Hever Castle Golf Club in Kent. In today's first round she did not have the best of starts dropping six shots in the first five holes. However, she recovered well to play the rest of her round in level par (including four birdies) to leave her in second place, just one shot behind the leader Anjelika Hammar from Sweden.
Update Tuesday 4 June 2026 - On the second and final day Stacey shot a 79 to finish in third place at 13-over par. Her round included three birdies, but two double-bogies in the last three holes prevented her from matching the top two scorers on 9-over.

West Hove hosts a Sussex Boys' County Match
The Club was proud to host yesterday's Under-14 match between Sussex, Surrey and Essex. The SCGU's Under-14 Team Manager, Ian Jaggard, has today been in touch with our General Manager (Gary Salt) and thanked us for staging a very successful junior match for the first time. He also said that "the course was fantastic", and thanked Graeme and his Pro-shop staff, Clay and his catering team and the bar staff (soft drinks only!) for their help. He was grateful for "the welcome at the Club" and for "the wise and welcome presence of your Club President who doubled as starter" - yes, Michael Phillpot.
Apparently, the only bad thing was the match result - Surrey won with 26 points, Essex had 23 points and Sussex finished with 11 points. A report and the full results will be published on the SCGU's website very soon.

The SCGU "Plate" competitions
Further to the news item dated 29 April, our team of Category 2 and 3 golfers played host to Boars Head GC today in the first round
of the SCGU's "Exclusive Golf Plate" competition. In a generally close match we won 3-1 with wins from Gary Chamberlain & Adge Hansell (1 up), Tony Jeffcoat & Phil Harris (5 up) and Matt Blake & Dave Bidwell (1 up). Pete Rodger & Don Shepherd Snr. lost 1 down. We have now been drawn to play at home in the second round on 15 June against either Holtye GC or Lindfield GC.

Our 'scratch' team of Category 1 golfers did not play today,  but they have also been drawn to play at home on Saturday 15 June, in the SCGU's "Optimus Plate", against either Slinfold GC or Piltdown GC.

Raoul Ellis does well in the Sussex Senior Championship
East Brighton GC hosted the Sussex County Golf Union's Senior Championship last Monday, a 36-hole scratch stroke-play event where West Hove were represented by Raoul Ellis and Ivan Parnell. Raoul distinguished himself by beating the other 39 competitors to win the Best Gross AM prize with an excellent 77 (the standard scratch score being deemed 'reductions only'). Unfortunately, Raoul could not sustain his form for the afternoon round and the championship was won by Roy Stephenson (Cooden Beach GC) with a total score of 154.

Junior Summer Golf Camps 2010 for children aged 8 and over

Our Junior 'Summer Golf Camps' return
The Club is delighted to report that our Assistant Professional, Russell Cronin, will once again be running our very successful 'Summer Golf Camps' during the school summer holidays. These fun-packed events are designed for youngsters who have never before played this great game of golf - or for those who have played but would like to improve. This will be the sixth year that these camps have been run and from past experience it is advisable to book early as spaces are limited.

Stacey Rodger plays in Sweden
Over the weekend Stacey Rodger travelled to Sweden to prepare for her fourth professional tournament, the 2013 Slvesborg Ladies Open which is being hosted by Fanny Sunesson (probably best known as Nick Faldo's long-time caddie). Stacey practiced yesterday, is taking part in the pro-am event today, and tees off in the third group at 8.20am tomorrow morning against 116 elite lady golfers from eighteen countries worldwide. We will report her progress here - or you can visit the LET Access Series website for live updates on the event.
Update 22 May 2013 - Unfortunately Stacey had a very poor start and finished the day on +15 to be tied in 113th place. Her early start did not help as conditions improved throughout the day. To show how difficult the course was set up, only five players beat par. More tomorrow.
Update 23 May 2026 - Stacey performed better today and had four birdies in her round but had a disastrous nine on the par four 18th. Only three ladies are now below par (all at -1) and the cut for the top forty players came at 7-over par, reflecting the difficulty of the course.

Pat French gets a hole-in-one
In today's Seniors' Medal competition Pat French had a hole-in-one on the 156-yard, par three, 7th hole. His playing partners Graham Whitehouse and John Worrow asked whether he was "going for the green or the pin" - Pat confidently chose the latter, but did not expect to see his tee-shot with a rescue-wood land on the green and roll into the cup. Apparently, this was Pat's second 'ace' on this hole - the first being over ten years ago when the seventh tee was nearer to the eighth tee (and he was playing on his own!).
In time honoured fashion Pat treated everyone to a drink - but he should be rewarded later with a
3-litre bottle of wine thanks to the 'Rioja Bordon Hole-In-One Wine Promotion'. For the record Pat's 'ace' helped him win today's competition with a net 69. Congratulations Pat.

The BDGS Junior Cup
Brighton & Hove GC today hosted the third Brighton & District Golfing Society (BDGS) event of the year, the Junior Cup (a foursomes matchplay event for golfers with a minimum handicap of twelve). Our team comprised:

Stephen Chipp & Martin Emery
David Gillies & Norman Milburn
Dave Bidwell & John Scott
Mike Whitty & Don Shepherd Snr.
Dave Goldsmith & Mervyn Stovell
In the morning matches the hosts Brighton & Hove beat East Brighton and we lost 2-3 to the Dyke. In this afternoon's Plate we again lost 2-3 (v. East Brighton) whilst the Dyke went on to win the Junior Cup by beating Brighton & Hove. Our pairings of Mike Whitty & Don Shepherd, and David Gillies & Norman Milburn, performed well by winning both of their matches.

Jonny Ingram finishes third again
Our current Club Champion, Jonny Ingram, competed in his second professional competition today, a 36-hole event on the Players' Tour at Frilford Heath GC, Oxfordshire (which will be hosting
the English Amateur Championships in July 2013 over the Red and Blue Courses). Today's event was over the same two courses and Jonny shot +2 on the Red Course and -2 on the Blue Course to finish on level par (and Clubhouse leader). However, the final groups pushed Jonny down to joint third place, a very respectful result. Remarkably, he was beaten by the same two players who beat him just nine days ago - this time Lee James was the victor (on -6) and James Doswell was the runner-up (on -3).
Jonny commented "I played really solid and I'm exceptionally pleased that I was able to handle the pressure around a very tough golf course."

A letter of thanks
At a recent charity golf day at West Hove, a visiting golfer lost three valuable items from his golf bag. Our General Manager, Gary Salt, has today received the following letter:

"Dear Gary
Charity Golf Day
I wish to thank your staff and members for their vigilance and honesty. As you know I managed to lose three personal items over the day all of which were handed back to me before the football had started that evening. Although I believe myself lucky I think the club should also take the credit for restoring my faith in the human race. Thank you also for putting on a memorable day for all of those attending. Kind regards, Yours sincerely...."

Jonny Ingram's first pro' event
Congratulations to Jonny Ingram who played in his first professional competition today, an 18-hole Players' Tour event at Surrey National GC. He played well and finished in joint third position on level-par, just two shots behind the joint best scorers (James Doswell winning the event after a play-off against Lee James). Jonny started his professional career with a bogey five on the first hole but this did not deter him. Although he had another five bogeys, he should take immense pride in scoring six birdies in his round. Well played!

As usual, the event was well organised by the BDGS Secretary Don Weston and the prizes were presented by their President David Abercrombie. Our five pairs were Gordon Eaton & Phil Stempt, Brian Murphy & Tim Ingram, Howard Coulson & Tim Silsby, Jeff Rhodes & John Miller and finally Bob Smith & Kevin Woolley.

Brian Robinson gets his first 'ace'
Five 'Amigos' (one of West Hove's internal golfing societies) returned from Morocco last night with news that one of them had achieved his first 'ace'. Sixty-six year old Brian Robinson, who plays off 20, achieved the feat on the 15th hole of the Royal Marrakech Golf Club, better known as the 'Brigitte Bardot hole' for the two large mounds either side of the green. Brian hit his driver on this 190-yard par-3 hole and was advised by his caddie that his ball had hit one of the mounds and rolled across the green. After some searching, Brian was delighted to eventually find his ball in the bottom of the cup - his first hole-in-one! Congratulations Brian.

West Hove win the Jubilee Cup
Eight golf clubs from around Sussex competed today in West Hoves Jubilee Cup. In a reversal of last year's result, West Hove won with a total net score of 459 and Peacehaven GC were second with 464 points. The other competing clubs were Brighton & Hove GC, East Brighton GC, Hollingbury Park GC, Rustington GC, Singing Hills GC and Waterhall GC.

Congratulations to the Albion
As one of the "Friends of the Albion", West Hove Golf Club would like to congratulate Brighton & Hove Albion FC on finishing fourth in the "npower" Championship, thereby qualifying for the end of season "Play-Offs".
Many West Hove members are Albion season ticket holders and will now be looking forward to the second leg of the Play-Off semi-final against Crystal Palace at the Amex Stadium on Monday 13 May. However, most of these supporters will not have the opportunity to visit Selhurst Park to watch the 'Seagulls' in the first leg, so the Club will be holding a special "Members' Bar Promotion" in the Clubhouse on Friday 10 May - it should be a great evening.

Jay Stally chosen to play for England
The Club is delighted to report that the English Deaf Golf Association (EDGA) has selected West Hove member Jay Stally to represent them in this year's '4 Nations Cup'. This is a bi-annual match-play event between English, Irish, Scottish and Welsh deaf golf teams and this year's event is to be played between 5 & 8 August at the Vale Resort, Wales National Golf Course.
Last year, the EDGA were proud to announce that the two-time Major winner, and four-time Ryder Cup Captain, Tony Jacklin OBE had agreed to become their Patron. It is not generally known, but Tony has been hearing impaired for over 25 years and wears a hearing aid on both ears. Congratulations to Jay on his selection - we will report on his progress in August.

Stacey Rodger plays in Spain
As reported on 21 April, Stacey Rodger has travelled to Spain and will be playing in the inaugural Ocho Golf Ladies Open, a 54-hole stroke-play championship over the Augas Santas Balneario and Golf Resort course. Over 100 competitors from 24 countries will be participating and Stacey has the honour of being the first to tee off, at 9.00am tomorrow. This will be Stacey's third professional event and no doubt her toughest to date - we wish her well.
Update, 1 May  - In today's first round Stacey finished in joint 69th place on 76 (6 over par) having been level par after the first eleven holes. It was tough, with only 11 ladies beating par.
Update, 2 May - Stacey performed a little better in today's second round with a 4-over par 74. This left her on 10-over par, just five shots from the 'cut' for the final 18 holes tomorrow.

Stacey Rodger receives her first pay cheque
The Club's current Ladies' Champion, Stacey Rodger,
played in her second professional event yesterday and received her first pay cheque. She played in the 36-hole Roehampton Gold Cup and was leading after the first round but finished joint second overall, a fantastic achievement. Her first tournament took place earlier this month in France where, unfortunately, she came joint 75th out of a field of 113. Like the UK, the coast of north-west France was witnessing exceedingly cold and windy conditions and the tournament had to be reduced from 54 to 36 holes because of the icy conditions - not the best way to start your professional career!
Stacey leaves for Spain on the 29th April for her next tournament in the
LET Access Series, the official feeder tour to the Ladies European Tour.

Snow update
After last night's blizzard-like conditions, the course and clubhouse have remained closed all day today. Sadly, the course will be closed again tomorrow (Wednesday 13 March) but Duncan Haste and his team of Green-keepers will prioritise the clearing of our entrance road so that the Clubhouse can re-open - check here for the latest news
and click here for photos
As a consequence of the adverse weather, today's Golf Committee Meeting had to be postponed but this no doubt pleased Club Captain John Godley and Committee Member Matt Blake who both spent the whole of last night stuck on the A23 at Handcross. It is understood that it took John fifteen hours to travel the 64 miles home and Matt apparently returned to work near Heathrow on the advice of the police instead of trying to get home. Roll on Spring!

Neil Coles has a fall
On 22 January and 3 March we reported that Neil Coles, the
legendary eight-times Ryder Cup player, would be visiting West Hove GC next Saturday (16 March) for a demonstration and Q&A session. Regrettably, we have to report that Neil will not now be able to fulfill this event as he had a fall at his home yesterday and has injured his shoulder.
Our Head Professional, Graeme Crompton, reports that the the Benross demo' day will still take place but unfortunately there will be no appearance from Neil. Apparently, Neil feels very sorry to let us down but he will endeavour to come along later in the year.

The 2013 Alan Covey Cup
The first and second round draws for the Alan Covey Cup (the Sussex County Golf Union's Junior Knockout Championship) were made today. West Hove Juniors were drawn to play at home against Pyecombe GC on Sunday 5 May in the first round and the winners of that match will then play at home against Ham Manor GC in the second round on Sunday 2 June.

Monday 4 March 2013

Congratulations go to Holly Crompton, one of our Junior girls, for breaking 100 for the first time. This was good enough for Holly, who played off 34, to achieve another notable first by shooting a net 65 to win her first Junior Medal. And if you thought the name was familiar, you're right, she is the daughter of our Head Professional Graeme. Her new handicap is 30.5.

West Hove Ladies beat Willingdon GC
Our Ladies' team has
won their second round match in the Daily Mail Classic. In another closely fought match Grace Shepherd and Jo Common lost but Jackie Briant, Bernice Lowe and Rita Hedderman all won to achieve a 3-2 win away to Willingdon GC. Our team captain, Grace Shepherd who played with an injured shoulder, said that she was "very proud of the girls" and praised Bernice in particular as she had never played the course before. We wish our ladies good luck in the next round.
On Thursday 7 March Jackie Pinker and Jill Corbett will be representing West Hove GC in the Daily Mail Foursomes, at home to a strong Worthing GC pairing. We wish Jackie and Jill good luck too.
UPDATE: Jackie and Jill unfortunately lost to the last putt on the last hole - a valiant effort.

West Hove's men lose in the Daily Mail Classic
Further to our report dated 12 February our men's team were narrowly beaten in the second round of this nationwide knock-out event at East Sussex National GC. Playing over their 6,700 yard track in cold and windy conditions proved just too much for our team who lost 2-3.
Jeff Rhodes and Gary Chamberlain won their matches but Steve Nielsen, Phillip Stempt and team captain Phil Harris just failed in their attempts to secure a win. They send their best wishes to our ladies' team for their second round match.

Latest news from the Pro-Shop
To celebrate three years as Head Professional at West Hove, Graeme Crompton decided that it was time to give the Pro-Shop a 'makeover'. He has therefore spent the past few weeks totally refurbishing the premises with the help of our handyman, Peter Averillo, and member Colin Harrocks (who has fitted new carpets).

Graeme is absolutely delighted with the results and invites all members and visitors to the Club to come along to the Pro-Shop to have a browse around. He has new stock arriving daily and the new products include twelve models of Adidas shoes, Proquip sweaters and Motocaddy motorised trolleys. Other products, including Under Armour clothing and golf-clubs from Callaway and Benross, will be arriving very shortly. Graeme and his team are very keen to help you, so give them the opportunity to match or beat a price before buying elsewhere.

Graeme (who created the West Hove Golf Academy on the only 18-bay Driving Range open to the public in the Brighton area) is recognised as one of the best coaches in Sussex and he is ably assisted by Russell Cronin - AND, from this month they have been joined by Sam Cains who has previously coached at three other Sussex golf clubs. please click here for details.

Lastly, a reminder that Graeme will be hosting the legendary eight times Ryder Cup player Neil Coles in a few week's time for an exhibition and question & answer session coupled with a demo-day hosted by Scott Nightingale on behalf of Benross Golf. This superb event 'tees-off' at 10.00am on Saturday 16 March and Neil will be on the range hitting shots from 1:30pm to demonstrate the fabulous new Benross Golf range of products. This event is FREE, so make a point to pop along to our Driving Range and why not bring a friend too! (You can even book a personal 30-minute slot).

Health & Safety Announcement
Following the retirement of Brian Hazelgrove as the Director responsible for Health & Safety (H&S), the Club is pleased to announce the following organisational changes.
With immediate effect, Gordon Eaton will be the Director responsible for H&S matters and he is pleased to announce the appointment of Brian Murphy as the clubs new 'Health & Safety Officer'.

Brian is extremely well qualified and experienced in H&S matters and will soon undertake a complete review of all the Club's procedures in conjunction with the Clubs management team. As his role is voluntary, the day-to-day overall responsibility for implementing H&S policy will, of course, remain with Gary Salt, the Clubs General Manager.

Gordon hopes everyone will join him in congratulating and thanking Brian for agreeing to take on this very important role for the Club. At the same time, Gordon tenders his grateful thanks to Brian Hazelgrove for all his past work.

Options for the 2013 'Mixed Away' competition are announced
Mike Whitty has been looking at numerous packages for the 2013 'Mixed Away' competition which features the 'Ron & Sue Baker Trophy' which was won last year by Mick & Betty Laing.

After eliminating a number of options, Mike has come up with three excellent packages. The first is a return to the Golf-Hotel de Saint-Saens, Chateau du Vaudichon, France for four days in August and the other two packages are for a week in Turkey. The two Turkish options are very good value 'all-inclusive'  packages at a five-star hotel and feature good flight times. They are scheduled to start on either 14 or 15 October, thus avoiding the extremes of weather.

Anybody interested in joining this very popular annual event is invited to check the full details which are now on display on the 'Mixed' notice-board in the Clubhouse foyer. Mike needs to know your preference by
18 March to secure the present quotations and reserve the flights where these are required, so please act quickly.

Sussex County Golf Union
Optimus Exsisto

News from the Sussex County Golf Union
The Sussex County Golf Union (SCGU) has announced that the sponsor of
their premier team event, the Inter Club Scratch Team Championship, has changed. This prestigious knockout championship was known last year as the PAV Trophy, but this year the SCGU has a new sponsor, 'Optimus Consulting'. Further details will be published on the SCGU website.

The SCGU has also published their Junior Fixture List for 2013. The fixtures include the Sussex County Boys' Under-14 match against Surrey and Essex on Sunday 2 June (which West Hove is very proud to host) and, of course, our own Junior Open on Sunday 14 July.

How about joining West Hove Juniors?
In 2006 West Hove GC was only the second club in the country to be given GolfMark status (
a  national scheme that identifies and recognises junior and beginner friendly golf facilities).
This prestigious award is reviewed every three years by England Golf and at the end of last year we  were re-accredited with this honour for the third time.

The Club has long had a thriving Junior Section but is still constantly working towards further improvements. The Junior Section's Mission Statement reads "The aim of our Junior Section is to provide a fun and safe working environment for children from 9 to 17 years of age and to give them golfing skills that can be enjoyed for the rest of their lives".

A
s Spring approaches, we  invite all youngsters who would like to take up golf to come and join us. To learn more please click here for further details - and an application form.

Congratulations and best wishes to both of our teams for the second round of this nationwide competition.

Jonny Ingram to turn pro'
The Club is delighted to report that Jonny Ingram is to turn professional in the next few weeks. Twenty-one year-old Jonny has been West Hoves Club Champion for the past three years and he now feels the time is right to have a go on the pro circuit. He intends to play a number of events on the established PGA EuroPro Tour and also The Players Tour, a newly formed tour that has its first full season starting next month.

Jonny took up golf ten years ago and he made such quick progress that the Sussex County Golf Union invited him to represent them just three years later at age 14. He has continued to develop his golfing skills, and play for the county, and currently plays off a plus-two handicap.

Jonny recognises the difficulties ahead but is very determined to give it his best shot. He is keen for members, and others, to help him with his future plans and has therefore created a new limited company, J I Golf Limited. If you would like to learn more about his plans and how you could help please
visit Jonnys own website  which is currently under construction. And, to help with his initial costs, the Club will be holding a one-off Stableford competition for ALL categories of membership on Saturday 2 March. click here for details  Good luck Jonny.

Snow report / Course Status
Following the recent heavy snowfalls there appears little likelihood of our course opening for play this week. The Club is obviously very keen to allow play to resume as soon as possible, but we must be mindful not to open too early as the course could be easily damaged. Until this spell of bad weather is over we will continue to provide information on our 'Home' page. In the meantime, our course continues to look like the Arctic, as can be seen in this photograph.

Having just returned from his attempt to qualify for the Asian Golf Tour, our
Assistant Professional Russell Cronin would like to thank those four West Hove members (Eddie Allan, Kevin Blake, Russell Newland and Phil Jackson) who went out to support him in Thailand. He also extends special thanks to Sean Holland (who did not travel) for his help.
As most West Hove members will know, our Practice-Range Manager Graham Marchant is currently enjoying an extended holiday in Thailand and he too made his way to the course to add support. Russell has penned a note of thanks and a brief overview of his experiences.

Don't let the snow beat you
The recent heavy snowfalls have brought golf to a standstill throughout Sussex. However, our green-keepers and pro-shop team have performed miracles in clearing our half-mile access road and the driving-range bays. This means that our clubhouse, pro-shop, kitchen and driving-range are open to both members and guests. You may not currently be able to play a round of golf, but you can take advantage of all our other facilities, in particular the only
18-bay driving range open to the public within the Brighton & Hove conurbation. Why not pop along and keep your swing in shape? Don't let the snow beat you!

Russell Cronin's progress in Thailand
As reported on Monday,
our Assistant Professional Russell Cronin is competing in Thailand to try to qualify for the Asian Golf Tour. There are nearly 300 entries from all over the world and the competition is bound to be very tough. This was apparent in today's first round over the Springfield course when Russell shot a five-over par 77 to be tied in 109th place.

Update Thursday 17 January 2026 at 1.00pm: In today's second round of the Qualifying School at Springfield Royal, Russell had a disastrous 88 to finish way-off the projected cut of 6 over-par. With his dreams shattered, he must now face the long trip home to a freezing Britain!
